My precious baby's stories are below.
They are the reason I do what I do today -
pet rescue and helping others when their pets cross over.
I know how heart breaking it is when they are no longer with us,
and honoring them helps bring some comfort.
Only time heals, although their stories and
unconditional love are never forgotten.

Hogan Perry
Rescued 2010 ~ Nov. 30, 2017

Hogan was a gentle giant with his family, so loyal and protective. He had a rough start as a puppy; he came to us at 9 months old. Having never lived indoors before, he took to being in our home like he had been here all his life.  He left us way too young!! We miss our BIG boy..
the BEST DOG EVER!!!

Hope Perry
Rescued 2004 ~ Dec. 21, 2014

Hope, pictured here with Felix, was a very special girl. She was rescued from near starvation, but in spite of her difficult start in life, "Hopie" was always happy, happy, happy.. reminding us that you can move past the pain and hurt of neglect and embrace life with joy. She had so many nicknames, such as Hopie the Love Bug and Daddy's Fatty. She is deeply missed!

Marty and I appreciate the cards and heartfelt messages for the loss of our Hope.
It's always so hard to lose our fur babies.

Petunia Perry
August 2009 ~ June 2014

Petunia, "Tunie", was a sweet, shy girl with the softest meow. Her life was way too short, and we sure do miss her. She was adopted from Angel Paws Adoption Center, and although she wasn't a cuddle bug, Tunie was very loved, and had a very special place in our hearts.

Major Perry
11/17/1998 ~ 7/2/2011

Major was a "foster" from
St. Martin Humane Society who came to live with us in 2002. We immediately fell in love with his beauty and wonderful nature.

Felix "The Man" Perry
7/20/2010

Felix came from Iberia Humane Society. He was an older cat that had obviously had some rough times.  He came to live with us to retire in the county and to do what he loved best, and that was to hunt.  The critters did not stand a chance with him around here! He was loved and will be missed!!

Hannah, Dayna & Marty Perry
Hannah Belle Perry
10/16/1998 ~ 5/14/2010

Hannah was the most loyal, protective best friend that I have ever had.  I still remember the day we went to see her, just a seven week old pup, and she insisted that we bring her home.  Somehow, she knew that we were meant to be together.  We were very blessed to have her in our lives for 11 1/2 years.. not nearly long enough.  She was, and always will be, the Queen of our hearts.

Sandi Lynn Perry
7/96 ~ 3/05

Sandi was found in a tire at her (human) dad's place of employment. She was scared of everything, which worked in her favor because it made her stick very close to us. Her nick-name was "T-Chien Rouge", our "Little Red Dog". We lost Sandi way too young to liver cancer at only 9 years old. She enjoyed camping, back packing and being close to her family.

Bob Anthony Perry
11/93 ~ 8/05

Bob was adopted from Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center in Lafayette, LA. His stubborn streak helped him to survive distemper, and continued throughout his life! Bob enjoyed camping, hiking, hydro-sliding, canoeing, fishing and just being a spoiled dog.   Bob started my love of rescuing animals, and that continues today.

A beautiful card from a friend

Thank you, Carmen, for sharing this with me.
We are happy to create a memorial of your pet.

Weeble
June 2018

A loving tribute written by his family: "Rest well sweet boy. You fought the good fight to the very end. We love you Weeble, Weebs, Weebo, Peebo, Peebs, Peebo Bryson, WeeDub, Dubs, PeeDub, Bud, Buddo and all the other names I can’t remember at the moment. You were the best friend I ever had and the BEST DOG I ever had. I will miss your sucking on your bankie pretty much every night since you were born(it’s with you now and You’re favorite snack, the banana),meeting me at the door barking like a crazy fool, your sweet, sweet gentle kisses, rolling around in the grass looking like a maniac, making me throw the ball till you were about to drop, ALWAYS winning at tugowar, our howling sessions where we sounded like a pack of crazed wolves, but most of all the LOVE you gave us and always wanting to sleep under the covers at night. I will miss putting my feet against you when I sleep because you were so warm and soft. My heart is breaking and aching and I don’t know how I’ll go on without you, Weebo. Nothing will ever be the same. You were one in a million and I will always love you forever and never forget you, my pal.  Danny Louviere 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🐶
And also, to THANK our cat, Howdy. He was Weeble’s constant companion night and day and always had to be by him no matter what. We love you, Howdy cat😘❤️😻
Fly free, my sweet boy. Momma and Daddy love you 😍❤️🐶😭"

A beautiful tribute written by Gizmo's mom: "My precious Gizmo you will be loved in heaven. We will miss you. I will never forget your snuggles, you coo-s and loves and so much more. I remember your story and always will. You at the pet store, I wanted a calico so much and you were chosen for me. I remember when I saw you playing with your toys and jumping off the walls with Joy. I know you are doing that again. I remember the awful fire we had in my first apartment. You were smart and hid in the couch. I remember every day coming home and you were always smiling. I remember most of all when I asked you should we keep Jimmy my husband and you meowed a great big YES. Your Mom and Dad Love you and will miss you, and look forward to seeing you on the rainbow bridge. I ordered the poem today to remember the one I love. You loved posing in front of the fire place. You are a wonderful Fur Baby."

Hallie
"Butter Girl"
2015 - Feb. 16, 2018

A loving tribute to Hallie: "We lost our “Butter Girl” on Friday February 16, 2018. Butter Girl real name was Hallie, but she was never called that from almost day one. She came to us as an rescue kitten from a Doctor in Miami, Oklahoma after we took our cat Indianapolis to the vet and was told he was tired and at the end of his life. Hallie was found wandering the streets and needed a  home. She loved to play with milk rings and she loved treats on her meals. We don’t know how old she was but she was born in the summer of 2015. Hallie was a loner and she only wanted affection when she wanted it. She’d give you the evil eye stare if you bothered her. We will miss her always asking for snacks at every meal and holding out to eat until she got them."

Totsie
"Tot"
March 28, 2017

This tribute was written by Tot's dad:
"To us, Tot was one of a kind loved companion that could never be replaced or forgotten. He was a ragdoll mix with a sweet lovable personality that everyone loved. He had the most beautiful blue eyes and big puffy fur. He loved people and was happy just to be with people. He purred 24/7 even up to his last days while he was sick. He moved to Lafayette with my Wife when she knew no one so she was very attached to him. He was my couch buddy and would come sit with me as soon as I would get home. I was very attached to him. He would nap with me all the time. He survived an episode of diabetes where I had to give him insulin twice a day. He actually went into remission and was healthy for another couple years until he was diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma. He loved a long life of 17 years and was absolutely spoiled the whole time. He was well taken care of. We miss him very much and the void he has left is difficult to deal with. We want to thank Dayna for her compassion and care in dealing with Tot's final arrangements! "

April 6, 2006 - March 4, 2017

This wonderful tribute was written by Molly's mom:

"Molly was born one of seven pups. Her and her brother was inseparable as u can tell in her pictures! She was always the sweetest pup ever. She been through alot! No one wanted her so we kept her as ours. We spoiled her as our lil baby!! She beat parvo as a pup! She became epileptic around 2! Medicine twice a day every day for about 9 years!! Like clock work. She would bark when it was time for meds! Allergies, yeast issues, flea dermatitis u name it poor girl been through it. Two years ago she fell into status epileptic! We thought we was gonna lose her. She wasnt suppose to live. She then had a stroke and couldn't walk. We rehabilitated her and she made a remarkable recovery. Almost 2 yrs to the day of the stroke she became sick. Her kidneys and liver failed and she fell into a coma! She fought and fought hard all the way to the end! She was a lovable gentle giant! Always so sweet and loved to snuggle and sleep in very strange ways! We always laughed at her silly butt!! I had too many pics and was hard to decided which to post. But i think they sum molly up really well. We will love her for ever and always. Will never forget that sweet face or those big brown eyes!

Sweet sweet Molly Rest in Peace!!!"

Sept. 30, 2015 - Jan. 25, 2017

Mick's mom wrote this tribute: "Mickolas "Mick" James Moore was saved on Sept 30 2015. He was a month old and weighed 3 pounds when I pulled him out of a McDonald's drive thru menu sign. He stole me and husbands heart immediatly. He was a very playful kitten. Quite the handful. But he grew up to be a very handsome, lovable, sweet cat who would greet us when we got home, stay in our feet, loved playing with his furbrother and fursister, catching birds and mice, and taking rides in the truck, he would talk to us in a baby meow for as big as he was. We will always lI've and miss you very much. Another great one gone too soon."

September 2016

Phoebe's mom wrote this as a tribute to her: "Ms. Dayna, I want to take a minute and thank you from the very bottom of our hearts for taking exceptional care of Phoebe after she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Her passing has left a very large hole in our hearts, but getting her back today in an absolutely beautiful urn has given us some comfort. She wasn't just a 14 yrs old lab mix, she was our baby, our protector, a friend to both our boys as well as our other 3 dogs. She was funny, living and caring and even in her old age had the heart of a puppy. She will forever be missed and we thank you again for taking care of her."

Buddy

August 21, 2016

"I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
His gentle head upon my knee
And shared his silent thoughts with me.
He'll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more his favorite ball
A voice far greater than my own
has called him to his golden throne.
Although my eyes are filled with tears
I thank him for the happy years
He let him spend down here with me
and for the love and loyalty.
When it's time for me to go
And join him there this much I know
I shall not fear the transient dark
For he will greet me with a bark."
 Our Buddy has our heart.

July 2016

A beautiful tribute to Lucy: "Tonight my beautiful Lucy flew over the Rainbow Bridge. She adopted me when my husband closed his avian business and brought her home to live. She loved to cuddle while I watched TV, sit on the porch in the afternoon and sit on the kitchen counter while I cooked dinner. She loved pasta in any form, chicken, mashed potatoes, bananas and fruit juice. She was my companion when my legs were broken and I was bedridden for four months. Lucy rode on my wheelchair and later on my walker. She gave me many hours of company and pleasure and I will forever miss her. Sleep well my sweet girl, today you soar with the eagles. Tell your "daddy" I miss him-you will see him before I do. Love, Mama"

Chico

Oct. 14, 2002 - April 8, 2016

His mom wrote this wonderful tribute: "This is Chico Pedigo!! He was very tiny when I bought him at 9 weeks old at a flea market in Shreveport La. in November 2002!! He was a great lil fellow that was the boss at our house!! He was a very smart little dog with a big ego was not scared of anything!! He was 13 going on 14 years old in October 2016!! He filled our lives with so much love and we are so lost without him!! Chico had to be put to sleep April 8th 2016 it broke our hearts he was not acting like himself so I brought him to the vet. My vet knew it was something with his heart but wasn't sure what so we sent him to Lafayette to be put on a heart machine that showed he was suffering with a large cancer mass almost the size of the inside of his heart so I had to make a hard decision to not let him suffer any longer as hard as it was I couldn't be selfish and let him suffer!! Thanks to Heavenly Pet Memorials for all their help I had him cremated and he sits on my fireplace mantle in my living room so he's still with us!! He will always hold a place in our hearts!! Gone but never forgotten!!"

January 2016

A note from Max's mom: "Max was a very special little guy. He was a biter and my swollen bloody hands were the proof of how angry he was. Dayna Guillory Perry, then Director of Angel Paws Adoption Center (Iberia Humane Society) at the time, saw past his fear. Roxanna Rocky Broussard Gates, called me and asked if I would foster him. If it would not have been for these two wonderful women, Max probably would not have lived to be 12 and no one would have seen his quirky little personality. He gave us so much joy and every single bite was worth it. Thanks, to Heavenly Pet Memorials for helping me through this rough time!"

Jerry Lee

Jan. 30, 2008 - Nov. 8, 2015

A Tribute Letter written to Jerry Lee by his mom:
Dear Jerry Lee, I am really happy I was with you when you went to rainbow bridge.  I did not realize until that moment how much I loved you and had needed you these past 7 years.  When I brought you home when you were 8 weeks old you were only supposed to be daddy’s boy but little did I know that you would steal my heart and fill an emptiness I felt from losing my parents and brother.  Thank you for always being there for me.  You’re a german shepherd meant for safety and security but you gave us so much more-so much love, so much joy, so much care, so much understanding, so much patience, so much kindness, so much loyalty.  Your love for us has always been huge and gentle.  I have never met such a happy and loving dog in my entire life.   It’s been a rough 4 days so far since you’ve gone to heaven.  I miss you so much.  I am lost without you.  Know that daddy misses you especially you jumping in bed every morning to wake him up, I miss you every second of the day, I miss you following me all day, I miss you having breakfast with me, I miss you riding with me to go get a snow cone, I miss you ringing the bell on the door to let you out, I miss you helping me with the groceries, I miss how you had trained me to play fetch at your command, lol, I miss you resting your head on my lap and looking at me with your sad eyes to get your way, I miss waiting on you hand and foot, I miss that you were king around here, lol I miss watching you chase the squirrels and rabbits.  I hope at rainbow bridge there are some squirrels and rabbits for you to chase.  Jerry Lee I miss everything about you especially how you loved your daddy and I unconditionally.   Saturday we are going to pick up your ashes and you will come home and when daddy and I pass away your ashes will be buried with us.  We will all be together again.  Jerry Lee the mark you left in my heart will always be there and I cannot ever replace you.  These tears will be gone someday but your memory will never be forgotten.  I guess I can’t be selfish and just wish I had a little more time with you.  Thank you for blessing us with your love and big heart… Until we meet again on the Rainbow Bridge.  Always remember that Daddy and Mama will always love you, Jerry Lee!!

Rest in Peace, my boy! XOXOXO Love Always, Daddy & Mama

Sammy
Rescued in 1997 - October 20, 2015

This sweet boy was so lucky to end up with his family. Here is his story from his mom: "Sammy was adopted from Iberia Humane Society (now Angel Paws Adoption Center) . We brought him home and it took him a little while to trust us. We brought him to the vet and had all the blood work and testing done to make sure he didn't have any medical conditions that we needed to know about. That was May of 1997, and the vet said he was approx 2 years old. Sammy's was very active as a younger dog and loved to play with tennis balls. In December of 2013, his back legs started giving him trouble and he was having trouble to walk. His dad made him a little doggie wheelchair and that is how he would get around. He loved being able to be by our side when we would move around the house. Just within the last couple of months, his front legs started giving him trouble so the doggie wheelchair was modified so he could still get around without falling. Again, he was the best dog that his family has ever had. We will miss him terribly."

If you said "Go" she was ready, til the very end.  She loved life and was always a happy dog. She never met a stranger and always greeted you with a wagging tail. She was a social butterfly. Sindy
2000 - 2015

A tribute to our darling girl Sindy - the most sweet-natured and gentle dog, who blessed us with her love and devotion for 15 years. She was a fat bundle of energy who exuberantly greeted us with a full-body wag and a smile as though we’d been gone for ages, even though only minutes may have passed since she saw us! She used to actually squeal with joy when we did return home after being away for a few hours! Despite her gentle submissive nature, she was the only dog I ever had who was not afraid of thunder or firecrackers. While the rest of our normally brave and bold canine gang were cowering under the bed in fright, gentle submissive Sindy, who usually rolled over on her back for them, was not afraid to step outside even during a barrage of firecrackers on New Years’ Eve. A trait that never failed to amaze us! She was 112 in dog years and lived a healthy life, except for the last few months, when she became incontinent and developed renal failure. She remained a cheerful happy thing till the very end however. We are truly blessed to have been adored by this loving grateful dog – the tiny starving puppy we rescued from the streets. There’s a hole in our hearts and life is not the same without Sindy.

such a strong spirit, happy and brave
till the end.
He was the boss of us all

of thunder and fire crackers!
He was such an affectionate
happy rascal who knew
how to get his way.

So grateful for the gift of his

It is on our hearts that

Biscuit was such a loving dog, not typical Chihuahua, wanting to attack the world (like Petey was).  She loved sitting at the front door and watching the squirrels outside, her favorite pastime was playing with the squirrels.  Biscuit loved chasing them.  She was also very, very curious, if she saw someone looking at a plant or something in the yard she was right there next to them wondering what they were looking at. If she saw a group of people next door talking she had to go over and introduce herself.

Ezra
August 2014

From SpayNation, Lafayette, LA - "Goodnight, Ezra".. the following is her tribute from their Facebook page:
With heavy heart, we bring you sad news of a beloved feline familiar. After her long illness, we say goodbye to the gentle grande dame of Wild Cat SpayNation. Adored, admired, respected (and occasionally feared), Ezra came to us already quite mature in 2009 and had been the ubiquitous office mascot since our surgical center's opening the following year. While periods of isolation made her largely aloof and independent, this pretty lady still allowed us to steal the occasional caress behind her ears and was good company, sitting beside us in her favorite desk chair as we went about the daily routine. We took pleasure in how enthusiastically she devoured fishy canned cat food and treats, and was partial to lazing in the cozy, catnip-scented bed in the Director's office. Even more than these things, our kitty loved going outside to sprawl in the sun or to retreat to the shade of a bush, providing us perfect companionship as we washed traps or performed other chores on the grounds. For this and more will she be missed. We thank her for all that she gave us and we wish her a good journey.

Petie
August 2014

Petie was loved… for a short time, and deeply, by many. He went home today after trying for a couple of months to overcome his incredible obstacles. The only comfort for those who knew and loved him is knowing that he is running free now, along with all the other little ones who were loved for a short time, and deeply, by many.

Dedicated to all the rescue fur babies who knew love, sometimes for a very, very short moment, and to all the people who facilitate and have their hearts broken over and over again.

More about Petie can be found on Angel Paws Adoption Center’s Facebook page. This is a link to one of the videos posted about him: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=885660871461038set%3Dvb.269263356434129&type=2&theater

Chyanne and Belle were always together.  When they were young, they ran and played hard together. Chyanne was always very protective of Belle.  When you asked Belle where "sissy" was, she would find Chyanne.  Upon research, Lab and Yorkie breeds are expected to live for 12 years.  Chyanne was 15 and Belle was just under 14 when they went "home."  Both had a long life and were loved by the entire family.  We do not have children, so Chyanne and Belle were our "girls".

In Loving Memory

Chyanne

July 1999 - July 15, 2014

Chyanne was born sometime around July 1999 north of Natchitoches, LA.  She was one of two litters with 17 puppies.  All of her brothers and sisters looked like German Shepards.  Chyanne was the only solid white puppy.  When we arrived to pick out a puppy being given away, she ran and hid in the far corner under a work bench.  The owner of the parents had to crawl under the bench to retrieve her for me because she was the one that I wanted.  Chyanne was an extremely intelligent dog.  She would find ways to get out of the yard to sit at the back door, wait at the truck door, or visit her friend a street over.  When we tried to put up an electric fence on the chain-link fence, she would break the connection with her paw.  I consider Chyanne my lab, but she was actually a mutt.  She was a German Shepard, Lab, Husky, and Chow mix.  She was solid white with yellow eyes.  She was one of the prettiest and smartest dogs I have ever had the pleasure to love.  She became ill in 2012 due to her aging body.  Chyanne went "home" on July 15, 2014 with her "sister", Belle, in tow.

In Loving Memory

Belle

October 7, 2000 - July 15, 2014

Belle was born October 7, 2000 in Franklin, LA.  She is the daughter of my mother's Yorkie, Silver Angel.  She was one of three.  Belle's oldest sister was still-born and the middle sister, Dixie, died several years ago.  Belle was the runt.  When she was just a couple years old, she became very ill.  After many tests and surgeries, we discovered her liver was underdeveloped and she would require a special diet.  About 2008 Belle became very ill again and was in ICU.  She had a list of complications that she lived with for another six years.  Belle went home on July 15, 2014 with her "sissy", Chyanne.

He was my pretty boy. He loved to eat all the time and would complain if he could see the bottom of his food bowl. He was a very lovable boy. Every morning he would climb up on me when I was in bed and lay down on me until I would get up and feed him. He would give my morning head butts to let me know he loved me. March 2014

This boy is special to me because he lived with me for a period of time as a foster dog in 2004. Polar was found in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, at McDonalds. He was thin and pretty much scared of everything. I often said he was an extra-large Chihuahua, and knew it would take a very special home to accept him as he was. Lucky for Polar, he did find the PERFECT home, and after a long ride, he made it to Connecticut and found his place with his new family. It's hard to believe it's been nearly 10 years since he was with us. I know he is deeply missed by his family, and I will forever be grateful that they trusted me enough to adopt this boy from so far away. RIP Polar.. I know I will see you again! Dayna & Marty Perry

Pippi Lotta Longstocking
December 2013

Pippi Lotta Longstocking was originally born in North Carolina.  Later, she lived with me in South Carolina, Hawaii and most recently became a honorary Louisiana resident, residing in "Cajun Country" from 2000-2013.  Sadly, my dear Pippi left this earth on December 6th, 2013 and was greeted in heaven by our loving God and by all of her previous step-siblings.  Pippi  was one of the best dachshunds anyone could ever have.  I adopted her from a family when she was approximately 2 years of age, and as she was approaching 19, we were blessed to have had her for approximately a total of 17 years.  Pippi could always be counted on for her uniqueness, loyal, loving and patient spirit.

During our first few months together, we enrolled in a basic obedience training class, where her instructor pulled us aside to tell us secretly, upon completion, that she was one the smartest dachshunds she had ever seen, and that if she had to select the smartest dog in her class she would most definitely be chosen as "her excelling top performer".  She followed it by saying "This dog will play you as a fool, and play stupid throughout her life because she is a dachshund, but she is most definitely not dumb…She understands more than she lets on."  Pippi  proved that comment to be true by the large vocabulary she learned over the years, and by all the ways she would instruct us when she was needing something specific, along with her personalized antics.

Pippi,  along with her 1st step sibling "Brittany", endured the long flight and huge move to Hawaii in 1999, where she first had to take up residence in their state mandatory 30 day quarantine facility, so she could remain with our family.  Even though Pippi  didn't originally enjoy swimming in the ocean, once she got used to her life preserver, she seemed relieved to actually be able to trust how this vest works and actually seemed to enjoy doggie paddling in the water with me.

Pippi was a lover and a fighter.  She accepted and loved all creatures and people alike. She was never a mean-spirited dachshund, as many are known to be "snippy in nature."  In her last year, she continued to give life her very best shot by proving that she was never going to give up, as long as her owners weren't giving up either.

In closing, I am posting this today because I want everyone to know what an awesome companion you were, my dear and loving little girl.  Just so you know you have made an indelible impression upon, all of those whom you have lived with these last several years.  Tina, your stand-in Mom, when I wasn't available sends you her love, as she and her adult children (Sunni and Kacie) have already felt the emptiness of their loss over your passing as well.  Thank you for your unconditional love and for always being there for us.  I surely never regretted my adoption of you, as you brought so much to my life and others you came in contact with daily.  May you now rest knowing your struggle is over, and may you live healed by God in Heaven, now and forever.
From Your Mom, who will never forget you nor stop loving you.

She and her brother, Garth, were found by a hunter, abandoned in the woods to die. Garth crossed over 2 years ago. Their legacy will forever live on through ARFLA. Sobek
November 2013

Sobek, aged approximately 11 1/2, found lost and wandering before Hurricane Isadore in 2002, died 11/6/2013 in the arms of his loved ones after a short battle with cancer. Sobek, Egyptian for the Crocodile God, he was stoic, courageous (except when he hid under my legs during thunderstorms), loyal, determined, loving and stubborn. He enjoyed travel, well not the traveling part but the getting there, he loved bacon, he was relentless in his pursuit of cats (his one and only foe) and he particularly loved Christmas and had a knack for picking out his presents and ripping them open. He spent his holidays on his family farm in Tennessee where he caught up with his cousins Scotty Boudreaux (from Louisiana) and Maggie (spawn of hell) In his older years he loved to share his couch with his 2 loving companions Marian and David and watch TED documentaries and Harry Potter. He was compassionate and tolerant of most humans, he was a great listener, a natural comforter, and a great friend. He is survived by his human Mom and Dad Marian and David, his Great Grand Mom Helen and Uncles David and Michael. He was greatly loved and he will be greatly missed. He will remain forever in our hearts. Rest in peace my love, my Sobek, my friend.

An Angel Borrowed
My sweet angel, brown eyed and true,
We are so heart-sick without you.
I knew you time was drawing near,
I held you and whispered, I love you into your ear.
It was an honor to be by your side,
But oh how I cried as we said our good-bye.
You filled our lives with happiness beyond compare,
What do we do, now that you are not there?
We long to hear you or see your sweet face,
sleeping quietly on the love seat, your own special place.
But God tells me, let not your heart be filled with sorrow,
Scout is here with me, she was your angel to borrow.

Written by Brandi Hanes

Hey Dayna,

I just had to share this with you. Right after you dropped Scout off to me, I came back inside and found this on the wall next to Scout's favorite spot, her love seat!! I just stood there and smiled...

Chinook

February 2012

CHINOOK
We found you many years past.  You were lost.
You were hungry, scared, alone, and shivering on a winter’s frost.
A lone ferret on a winter city night filled with fright.
We took you into our home and most importantly into our hearts
promising your life would be bright and everything would be alright.
Chinook became your new name.
You had so much love to exclaim.
You were full of mischief, fun, and comfort.
You would kiss me and play in my favorite shirt.
Chinook you became my light so shining and bright.
I promised you when you were young you would be in our household
when you became old, protected loved and cared for. Adored liked never before.
Then the day would come, when my eyes would be filled with tears I feared.
You left us in our arms my Chinook, old and gray
A life filled with love and adventure,
a promise kept many years ago that you would Never die alone.

We miss you Chinook with every day with every heartbeat we make.
You were a lone ferret on a winter city night and Chinook was your name.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done?
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

TREASURED FRIEND

We  lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And shared her silent thoughts with me.

She’ll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more her favorite toy
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to his golden throne.

Although my eyes are filled with tears
I thank him for the happy years
He let her spend down here with me
And for her love and loyalty.

When it is time for me to go
And join her there, this much I know
I shall not fear the transient dark
For she will greet me with a bark.

'Bell' was a wonderful retriever, pet and loyal companion!  A hunting retriever Champion, she displayed her retrieving talents to many on the championship circuit and to my friends and guests in the duck blinds of Pecan Island.  She had such a sweet disposition and was always willing to please.  She will be missed by all who knew her!

Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

A note emailed to me by Rosie's mom:
Hi Dayna, I just want to show my appreciation for you handling and respecting Rosie in this difficult time. It's going to be a long bridge to cross without her. She was everything to me. When I picked her up yesterday I was very upset, however, when I opened the letter you sent to me about how you handled her with such care and respect. I just felt so relieved.
I have 3 more dogs and 1 cat. I have never had a pet cremated, but now I think I am going to have this done to all my animals in the future. I feel like they are home with us everyday.
I just to say THANK YOU SO MUCH DAYNA!!!

No matter how hard we try, some don't ever make it to the loving homes they deserve.  Harley is one of those sad stories.  On 5/15/10, a very caring young man came to a Louisiana shelter and pulled Harley with the intention of fostering her for BoxAR Rescue.  He took her IMMEDIATELY to a vet clinic to have her checked out.  Harley died on the exam table.  We only hope that Harley knew that she was loved her rescuers wanted the best for her.

When you came into my life
I was told by the "experts" that
because of your heart defect,
you would live no more than
six months.  That was was nearly
14 years ago!  My heart will never
beat the same and I will never be the
same person because your heart came
into my life.  With your "broken heart",
you mended mine.  Be at rest, gentle
spirit, we shall meet again.

Prissy
4/1997 ~ 2/2010

Dear Dayna,

We want to thank you for taking care of our Prissy after her passing.  Should would have been 13 years old in April, and we had her since she was a teeny tiny baby.

Prissy was blind since about the age of 4 or 5, first in one eye, then the other.  That may have slowed her down a bit but didn't stop her, although she was never a fan of chasing a ball, she did love to chase Rock while he chased the ball, so we made sure all the balls squeaked. We would squeak them and roll them by her so when he chased them, she would feel him pass by and she would chase after him.  Let's just say that we would tire of that game before they ever did.

A couple of years ago, she went deaf and that changed her somewhat. She didn't play as much and she was very quiet, but still ran around the house looking for us when she wanted something.  Seeing her walk around the house, you would never know she didn’t see.  She loved lying out in the sun and she loved climbing up on our laps for a good back rub.

Watching her fall sick was very hard for us.  Making the decision to end her suffering, however painful for us, was the right thing to do.  I still think I can hear her in her corner of my room and I can still smell her.

I imagine now she can see and hear and is chasing Rock while he chases his ball all the while barking her loudest. Knowing you handled her with love means the world to us and we can't thank you enough.

A note from Lucy's mom:
Lucy was adopted from PetsMart 10 years ago.  She was one of the ugliest little kittens I'd ever seen and since I already had two cats at home (Fred and Ethel, thus the name Lucy) I was hesitant to take another.  So, I held her at the store for a little while and promised her that I would look in on her the following weekend and if she was still there that I would take her home with me.  I went back, she was still there, I took her home and I am so very, very happy that I did.  She melted my heart and will remain a part of it for the rest of my life.  I miss her so much I can't explain.  Adopt a pet!  They need us as much as we need them.
One thing that I didn't mention to you in my letter yesterday was that she learned to ring a little chime that hung on my refrigerator door when she wanted her treat.  It took me one weekend to teach her to ring the little chime and from that time forward when I would ask her if she wanted a treat she would run to the refrigerator door, reach up and ring the chime.  I would meet her there and give her that treat as promised.  No matter where I was in my house she was there.  She remains in my shadow today.

Thanks for doing what you do.  It helps the rest of us cope with the worst part of pet ownership.  The saying goodbye part.  I am feeling better now that Lucy's home.  I was feeling unsettled and lost until she was safe at home with us.  I give her little box a few soft taps every night as I pass her on my way to bed.  I think it's helped me come to terms with her absence.

Lucy "Lulu"
"Hello-o-o"
April 1999 - July 2009

Here's Lucy's hello story. When Lucy was a little tiny kitten I would call out to her when I would return home by saying, "Hello-o-o, Lucy, I'm Home".  One day during my arrival routine she let out a loud meow that sounded just like a "hello-o-o" back to me.  I would always scoop her up and give her a big hug and smooch and I guess it became her treat or reinforcement and over time she perfected that meow to sound exactly like "hello-o-o". She and I would sing hello to each other quite often and I have her singing her hello on tape that I will cherish forever.
